Hudson Murders: Police Arrest William Balfour

CNN reports that Chicago Police have arrested William Balfour for the murder of actress and singer Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother, and 7-year-old nephew, Julian Hudson. Balfour is the estranged husband of Julia Hudson, Jennifer Hudson's sister and little Julian's mother.

On Friday, October 24, Julia Hudson discovered the bodies of her mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, and brother Jason Hudson, 29, shot to death in her mother's south side Chicago home. Little Julian was missing, but his body was found later in his Uncle Jason's abandoned white SUV. He'd been shot numerous times.

Until his arrest today, Balfour, 27, had been classified as a person of interest, but he seemed the most likely suspect in the shootings, and the crime appeared to fall under domestic violence. Balfour also has a shady history.
William Balfour, 27, was first detained for questioning on October 24, the day Hudson's mother and brother were found shot to death. Authorities said at the time that they were holding Balfour for an unspecified parole violation. (CNN)
Some readers of this blog speculated in comments that Julia Hudson could be implicated in the murders because they thought the young mother's description of how she found the bodies and her writing on MySpace appeared suspicious. Others have been curious about William Balfour's mother, Michelle Davis Balfour, accusing Jason Hudson of selling drugs and by extension implying someone out to get him committed the murders, but far more people thought Balfour had the obvious motive, anger at Julia. In addition, little Julian was shot multiple times, and that type of brutality suggests a personal connection to the victim.

The Chicago Sun Times reports more on this story:
The South Side man long suspected in the October killing of actress Jennifer Hudson’s three family members was charged with murder Monday.

William Balfour, a convicted felon, was arrested Monday afternoon at Stateville Correctional Center, where he was being held on parole violations. ...
...Police believe Julia Hudson was in a quarrel with Balfour at the Hudsons’ home in the 7000 block of South Yale in Englewood. Donerson, 57, and Jason Hudson, 29, were shot to death in the home, but Julia was not there. Julian was found dead three days later in an SUV on the West Side.

Donerson’s first cousin, Ruth Nichols, said she and her family have been praying for an arrest, including special prayers over their Thanksgiving meal.

“It’s not going to bring your loved ones back, but if they have the person that did it, it’s some kind of relief,” she said. “I was just hoping they would get whoever did it.”

Nichols said she doesn’t know Balfour and refused to speculate if he was involved. She described the family as still “very upset.” (CST)
Balfour could still prove to be not guilty of this horrendous crime, but given his history he's got a hard row to hoe to defend himself.
