Islamic TV Network CEO Confesses to Beheading Wife

O.K. Last night I published a post at BlogHer about marriage and partly the idea that to have a successful marriage the woman must die to her own ego. This idea is in both Christian doctrine and Muslim doctrine, and despite the feminist movements efforts, it's still alive in secular thinking. The belief that the woman has no life of her own was so strong sometimes in cultures that in India long ago it was common to burn the wife when the husband died.

I think these ancient beliefs, that the female is inferior and property that dares to speak, are an undercurrent in violence against women and certainly may be at play when husbands murder their wives. Furthermore, I think that it may be hundreds of years before the concept/belief goes away, if ever.

In other words, when a woman, especially a wife, stands up and declares her independence, some unstable males steeped in traditions regarding the place of women will make the woman's death literal.

So, I'm on Twitter and see a tweet from CNN's Anderson Cooper about a Muslim TV executive who started his network to fight Muslim stereotypes:
Muzzammil Hassan was charged with second-degree murder after police found the decapitated body of his wife, Aasiya Hassan, at the Bridges TV station in the Buffalo suburb of Orchard Park, said Andrew Benz, Orchard Park's police chief.

... Hassan went directly to the police station after his wife's death and confessed to killing her, Benz told CNN. Benz declined to give further details. (CNN)
It seems this was his second marriage. His wife, Aasiya, filed for divorce earlier this month, per CNN.

While it may be argued Hassan is insane, it may also be argued that he probably believed his wife belonged to him in terms not only of love but also of chattel. I'd bet he believes he was the only one who had the right to end the marriage, which for some people is a cultural belief shared across religious lines. Most men, however, decide to get the divorce and be done with it, not go for the ax.

I'm not saying that Muslim men will behead their wives. I'm saying that any man who's unstable and obsessed about losing a woman may commit unspeakable violence against the object of his obsession if he has a cultural or religious belief based on the idea that the male is superior and his power absolute. It could be a case of a domineering personality with festering insecurities that chooses to focus more on cultural ideas that a woman is beneath a man and whose ego feeds on the teachings that absolves these kinds of murderers. (edited)

The CNN article indicates the couple may have had other domestic violence incidents. That's typical. Rarely is beheading the first sign that a man will be violent.

No matter how many beheadings, stonings, or terrorist attacks there are, we must never fear, resist or mock the precious and ever peaceful Islam. Who are we to say that raping 9 year-olds is immoral? Who are we to say that stoning gays and rape victims to death is evil?

Who are we to say that killing hundreds of people every month in the name of Allah is the height of evil? That is just their culture and ideology and it MUST be respected. Morality is all relative, we must remember that.
