Old School Friday: Bad Day, Man, Bad

The theme for this week's Old School Friday is music for a "bad day." Must be something in the water because I've had a bad week. So, here it goes ...

If I'm in a general funk after a bad day, then it's Curtis Mayfield from Superfly to Marvin Gaye's rendition of Mayfield's "Trouble Man" and then "Kung Fu."

Eventually I end up with Marvin himself and "Inner City Blues," which is the video below.

If I'm mad enough to throw something, then I listen to The Pope by Prince a few times to hear not just Prince but Bernie Mac saying "I ain't scared of you, m----------."

But for the song I'm most likely to put on after a bad day, I've got to step across the OSF 1999 line to November 2000 with Erykah Badu's Penitentiary Philosophy. This is a song I play when I am angry as in having a bad week, not just a bad day, and need to get over myself. I've driven in my car for 45 minutes with this song on loop.

You may have heard that Ms. Badu had a bad day of her own recently with a stalker toting a Toucan in front of her house. Read about that here.

After I've gone through my mad music, which probably will include Janet Jackson's "Control," and I start to simmer down, I may play "Do Whatcha Wanna" by the Rebirth Brass Band and then move forward to "Stir Up the Gift" by Joe Pace and The Colorado Mass Choir for the healing.

I have other music for a bad day, but much of it was recorded after the year 2000. Had a lot more anger issues that I needed to tackle, I think, after my divorce. ;-)

The creators of the Old School Friday meme are Mrs. Grapevine and Marvalus at OBW and has these rules, if you want to join the party.

I'm feelin' all of these. Ms. Badu of course, but Marvin's Inner City Blues is perfect. You are sayin' something here. Happy OSF and have a great weekend. I'm trying to get back in the game and off the sidelines, it has been an intense week for me.

I'm feeling your choices. Listening to Marvin Gaye is so much better than watching Motown Week on American Idol. I completely understand playing a song a gazillion times before you get over yourself.

This is one of the best themes in awhile, I needed this theme and it was right on time.

Marvin Gaye puts it into words, exactly how I feel. I can't believe how relevant this song is to the times. A lot has changed, but nothing has changed.

I thought about Erykah Badu, but I've played her twice already. I'm a fan.

See--this is why I love participating in OSF. Y'all always manage to pick stuff I never even thought about. Thanks you for your selections.

And yes, I did hear about Ms. Badu's recent drama. True story: I had a dream about Erykah last night. Not about to tell my business, but it was quite strange. LOL

Oh--and LMAO about Bernie Mac on Prince's song. So true!

Happy OSF!

Both of these are great picks, and for different reasons. Marvin and Erykah Badu come at it from some very different places, and that shows in the songs, but the feeling they touch on is so close to the same.
Great stuff, and Happy OSF!

It seems like the rough week made its rounds this week...glad this theme came up to help everyone release some of that stress.

The Marvin Gaye is perfection...and I feel you on the Erykah Badu...I myself have put this on repeat on one of those days...

Happy OSF!

"Evil
Don't you test me
Evil
You won't win" - Ms. Badu came strong with this lyric.

Marvin's song is one for the ages. Isn't it something how the more things change the more they stay the same. The words are just as true today as they were when they were written.

Hope you relax this weekend and next week is better work weekend.

Boy - everyone seems to all be on the same wavelength with their "bad days" I sure hope it gets better for you - I myself have had a pretty good week but, believe me, I've had some bad days that would drive a better person than me to drink so I am always grateful for my martini shaker, lol!

If you get a chance stop by my post for a little swing and a little jive and some boogie woogie - come on, you know where I'm going here - Big Bands

Happy OSF.

Oh Marvin, how I miss thee. :( I like the melange of songs you have on cue. Just ready to go. It's too bad that the theme has reflected the kind of week that some of us had.

Hope your weekend is on a light note!

great picks!! I started to post "Trouble Man" but the ladies won out this round!
When my family hears a song on repeat everyone just retreats to their corners and leave me alone until I am over myself!!!
Everyone needs their personal timeouts!

U made the suggestion of your blog, so here I am :-).
My cell song is Had A Bad Day,so...

Isn't Marvin always sort of perfect, IMHO? At it is still super topical. ~Mary

ps My Dad, living in a facility in his 80s, fell in love with the Bernie Mac show!

Gasp!

How did I miss your OSF post until today!

Two of my faves! Marvin and Ms.Badu! Perfect after a long and annoying day/week of employment.

I am glad that I rechecked myself and stopped by. These two selections are perfect for today.
