Beyonce's Drunk In Love Lyrics Explained

A lot of people were really upset about Beyoncé and Jay-Z's "Drunk in Love" performance at the Grammys. I knew it was all about sex. I mean, you'd have to be deaf, blind, and dumb not to see that just watching Beyoncé move and seeing how she was dressed. Other than that, I knew nothing.

For instance, I did not catch the references to Mike Tyson and Ike Turner in the song. But when someone brought those references to my attention, I watched the official music video and looked up the lyrics myself. Was it really that bad? Was there anyway to justify the mention of these two men?  I asked a friend to explain.

You may read her explanation of Beyoncé and Jay-Z's "Drunk in Love" lyrics at this link. If you'd like to share your opinion on the meaning of the lyrics or whether you think the "Eat the cake, Anna-Mae" line and reference to Ike Turner and Mike Tyson are appropriate or not, then please do. You can also tell me on Twitter. Seriously, I'm just curious.

WARNING: The explanation at the link (click here) has some adult language such the actual meaning of slang words about sex.

I'm thinking Jay is referring to the length of his penis when he says, "...I sling Clint Eastwood, hope u can handle this curve" . Dirty Harry was notorious for his expert skills using his .44, thus Jay's eight inch curved ding-a-ling....or maybe I'm just overthinking it. O_o

Thank you, Shasta. The writer of the explanation of "Drunk in Love" used package, which is a euphemism for penis.

You're the first person brave enough to comment. Good for you! :-)

Okay Drunk In Love. This is what I think...
The whole entire song is talking about sex. That is dirty talking, getting nasty, she speaking about what she like to do from fallatio to dominating him in the bedroom. The he boasts about how good he is in bed by using analogies. Hood talk (beat it up, clint eastwood, eating cake, biting) is simply saying that his penis is large with a curve (like Shasta said) that it may hurt her while having sex, him performing fallatio on her, that he likes to bite while having sex, etc...They are both talking about how they like to get out there and have fun with one another. In addition, it doesnt mean literally drunk..it means that the both of them are high on life and love with one another. They both did what the could to explain how much in Love they are with one another by using analogies...

Thank you, Gwen, for commenting. Your comment seems to affirm what the HipHop expert said in the original post, more or less.

Domestic violence is so serious where obvious reference or inference to it could easily be ruled inappropriate. If artists had rules to abide by I am certain that they would push the envelope. Making reference to Ike and Tina's cake incident (shout out to Lawrence Fishbourne for selling it) and flipping it to the bedroom or foyer or -- you get the picture -- was not inappropriate IMO. At no point did either speak of abuse or being attacked.

Reference to Mike Tyson was two fold: a NY heavyweight champion known to knock people out (beat up), then the obvious ear bite. People will continue to see him how they choose.

Just wanted to add: Clint Eastwood's gun is also referred to as the 44 Magnum ; "reppin the third" would only be referring to 3rd ward of her hometown. A notable ghetto / hood of USA.

Unfortunately the world wants to accept but is seldom in position to digest what all comes.

Jay-Z is referring to his penis being curve when he says "hope you can handle this curve"

I find it so interesting in all of these lyrics explanations, nobody is picking up on the other references. For example, she says she woke up in the kitchen with no memory of how she got there, and the last thing she remembers is dancing in the club. He then says she will need G3 (a slang term for the benzodiazepine drug, Xanax) to reach the heights he's taking her to. This is followed shortly by her saying the only thing that keeps her up is continuing to drink, followed shortly by the music taking on a distant, echoing to e, indicating that she is too drunk and high to know what is ahhpening. This song is about the 2 of them role playing a date rape scenario. Adding in the stuff about Mike Tyson and Ike Turner is just plain icky at that point. They are married and consenting adults. What they want to do in the bedroom is up to them, and whether someone wants to listen to it is their choice as well, but I find it hard to glorify rape in this way.
